[Gallery] Celebrating Canada's Protected Land from Coast to Coast to Coast 🍁
Happy Birthday to Parks Canada, the world's first national parks service.
On May 19, 1911, Parks Canada, then called the Dominion Parks Branch, was established to manage and protect the country’s national parks. According to Parks Canada, as of 2025 the federal agency manages 37 national parks and 11 national park reserves1 from the Atlantic to the Pacific and up to the Arctic Ocean. This amounts to approximately 343,377 square kilometres of protected land spread across diverse landscapes and ecosystems.
Though this gallery is by no means comprehensive (there are thousands of images not featured here!), I feel fortunate to have visited and photographed many of Canada’s national parks in nearly every province and territory. The following essay is a celebration of Canada’s landscapes and showcases the beauty and diversity of the lands that are protected for now — and for generations to come — under the National Parks Act.
