[Gallery] After the Fire: A Monochrome Series from Jasper National Park
"Dormancy" - Amidst the silence, life is preparing its return.
I happened to be on a backcountry trip when a wildfire engulfed 33,048 hectares of Jasper National Park, Canada, in late July 2024. Tragically, one-third of the town of Jasper was also taken by the flames. Thanks to satellite communications from my wife, I emerged from that trip with the knowledge of what had transpired, but the full scale of the destruction sank in when I saw the footage.
Many months have passed, and snow has blanketed the landscape. Last week, two other friends/photographers and I made the trek from Banff to Jasper to pay witness to what remains and what survived. This gallery, titled “Dormancy,” is a set that resulted from that trip.
Jasper National Park is a place I hold very dear. The fire took much, but not everything. Beneath the snow, seeds lie waiting. Amidst the silence, life is preparing its return.
